CAMBRIDGE ENGLAND MARCH 2019   OBLIQUE ARTS

THIS NEWS IS FROM THE JOURNAL OF THE ORAL HISTORY SOCIETY VOL 46 NUMBER 2 AUTUMN 2018

OBLIQUE ARTS, BASED IN CAMBRIDGE, HAS BEEN COLLECTING ORAL HISTORIES FROM THE IRISH TRAVELLER AND ROMANY GYPSY COMMUNITIES.ELMIRA ZADISSA ,ONE OF THE PROJECT WORKERS ,SENDS THIS OUTLINE OF THE PROJECT :

“ORAL HISTORIES : ROMA AND TRAVELLER COMMUNITIES IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE ” WAS FUNDED BY THE HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND (HLF ) TO BRING LIGHT TO AN IMPORTANT PART OF BRITISH HERITAGE” WHICH REMAINS MOSTLY HIDDEN AND NEEDS TO BE RECOGNISED AND CELEBRATED “.

IT HAS FOCUSED ON TRAVELLER MARKETS AND FAIRS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE TO THESE COMMUNITIES. MANY OF THE STORIES CARRY THE BURDEN OF EXPERIENCING RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION ,OF NOT BEING ALLOWED TO SPEAK YOUR OWN LANGUAGE ,OF BEING STIGMATISED AND EXCLUDED .

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TALK ABOUT TRAVELLER FAIRS WITHOUT MENTIONING EVERYTHING WHICH THREATENS THEIR EXISTENCE ;TALKING ABOUT THE PRIDE YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR HERITAGE WITHOUT SEEING THAT CELEBRATED PUBLICLY “.

ONE INTERVIEWEE ,CHRISTINE  , SAID OF HER CHILDHOOD: IT WAS FREEDOM “SHEER HAPPINESS ” SHE WAS BORN “TO MUSIC PLAYING “IN A WAGON AT A FAIR ,ONE BUILT BY HER FATHER , UNCLES AND GRANDFATHER .

THE MIDWIFE HAD TRIED TO STOP THE FAIR BUT HER MOTHER INSISTED THAT IT SHOULD RUN AS NORMAL : “IT WAS AFTER ALL ,THEIR LIVELIHOOD “HER PARENTS MADE A LIVING FROM RUNNING A LOTTERY STALL AT DIFFERENT FAIRS , AND SHE AND HER SISTER USED TO PUSH THE SWING BOATS NEXT TO THE STALL .

HOWEVER ,THE HAPPINESS AND SAFETY OF BEING PART OF A BIG LOVING FAMILY  WAS INTERRUPTED EVERY YEAR WHEN SHE HAD TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL ,WHERE SHE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO SPEAK ROMANY .SHE RECALLS THIS AS “DREADFUL I WAS CONSTANTLY BULLIED BY TEACHERS AND CLASSMATES BECAUSE OF MY BACKGROUND ”

RELATED EVENTS SO FAR INCLUDE “TAKING THE FLOOR AT FORD ” ,IN WHICH FEMALE WORKERS FROM THE FORMER FORD TRANSIT ASSEMBLY PLANT SHARED THEIR EXPERIENCES OF BREAKING INTO A MALE WORLD IN CONVERSATION WITH ORAL HISTORIAN PADMINI BROOMFIELD .

ONE RECALLED THAT :WHEN I FIRST STARTED (IN THE 1980S ) ,THE OLDER MEN DID NOT THINK THAT WOMEN SHOULD BE HERE …..THEY THOUGHT THAT WOMEN SHOULD BE AT HOME AT THE KITCHEN SINK .THIRTY YEARS LATER THERE WERE WOMEN IN ALL ROLES – SENIOR MANAGERS ,SUPERVISORS ,ENGINEERS ,QUALITY INSPECTORS ,PRODUCTION LINE WORKERS -WORKING AT THE PLANT . EARLY RESISTANCE BY THE OLD GUARD ,WHO FELT “THE LADIES COULDN`T HACK IT” BECAUSE THEY DID NOT HAVE  MUSCLE POWER AND “LEATHER HANDS “EVENTUALLY GAVE WAY TO ACCEPTANCE AS MORE WOMEN ENTERED THE WORKFORCE

SOCIAL MOBILITY TSAR WARNS OF `US AND THEM` `DIVIDE .

MORE SELECTION WOULD EXACERBATE PROBLEMS , HE SAYS .

CALL TO FOCUS ON TEACHERS AND PARENTS INSTEAD .

GRAMMAR SCHOOLS EXPANSION RISKS DISASTER ,MAY IS WARNED .

THE GOVERNMENT`S SOCIAL MOBILITY TSAR HAS WARNED THAT EXPANDING THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL SYSTEM WOULD BE A DISASTER ,A DAY AFTER IT EMERGED THAT THERESA MAY WAS CONCIDERING THE IDEA .

ALAN MILBURN ,THE FORMER LABOUR CABINET MINISTER WHO CHAIRS THE GOVERNMENT`S SOCIAL MOBILITY COMMISSION ,SAID ENDING THE BAN ON BUILDING NEW SELECTIVE SCHOOLS RISKED CREATING AN “US AND THEM DIVIDE ” WITHIN THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM .

HE SAID THAT PUPILS AT ENGLAND`S REMAINING 163 SELECTIVE STATE SCHOOLS WERE FOUR OR FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO HAVE COME FROM INDEPENDENT PREP SCHOOLS THAN FROM THE DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS .

“THIS IS NOT SELECTION EDUCATIONALLY ,IT IS SELECTION SOCIALLY .IF (MORE OF ) THAT IS WHAT IS BEING TALKED ABOUT ,IT WILL NOT PROVIDE A SOCIAL MOBILITY DIVIDEND ,IT WILL BE A SOCIAL MOBILITY DISASTER “. SAID MILBURN .

ON TUESDAY AN OFFICIAL DOCUMENT INDICATING THAT THE GOVERNMENT WAS PLANNING TO END THE MORATORIUM WAS PHOTOGRAPHED IN THE HANDS OF A CIVIL SERVANT OUTSIDE DOWNING STREET .

MILBURNS COMMENTS CAME DURING A WIDE  – RANGING INTERVIEW WITH THE GUARDIAN IN WHICH HE CALLED ON MAY TO TAKE URGENT ACTION TO CLOSE THE GAP BETWEEN THE WEALTHIEST AND THE POOREST ,AND WARNED OF AN OVERWHELMING AND “FESTERING SENSE OF SOCIAL RESENTMENT “ACROSS BRITAIN .

“THE HISTORY OF OUR CONTINENT TELLS US WHEN A MAJORITY FEEL THEIR AMBITIONS BEING THWARTED AND THAT A MINORITY ARE FORGING AHEAD ,THINGS CAN TURN NASTY “,HE SAID ARGUING THAT THE SCALE OF THE BREXIT VOTE UNDERLINED THE CHALLENGE .MILBURN POINTED OUT THAT OF THE 65 AREAS OF THE COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTED BY HIS COMMISSION AS THE WORST FOR EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS ,ONLY THREE VOTED TO REMAIN .
