NEWS APPEARS IN THE CURRENT ORAL HISTORY JOURNAL VOL 44 NO:1 APRIL 2016 OF THE MILFORD STREET BRIDGE PROJECT .

THE MILFORD STREET BRIDGE PROJECT IN SALISBURY WON TWO AWARDS FROM THE COMMUNITY ARCHIVE AND HERITAGE GROUP (CAHG ) IN 2015 ,ONE FOR INNOVATION AND THE OVERALL AWARD OF` COMMUNITY ARCHIVE  AND HERITAGE GROUP OF THE YEAR .

THE COMMUNITY HERITAGE AND ARTS PROJECT IS RUN BY THE ST EDMUNDS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION ,AND HAS BEEN EXPLORING THE HISTORY  THE AREA AROUND MILFORD STREET BRIDGE -A LARGE FLYOVER WHICH CARRIES THE CITY`S RING ROAD -FOR SOME TIME .

THE FLYOVER WAS BUILT IN THE EARLY 1970 S AND FOR NEARLY FORTY YEARS ITS BARE CONCRETE WALLS WERE A GIANT EYESORE .IN 2010 WE GOT PERMISSION TO PAINT A MURAL ON ONE OF THE WALLS ,SHOWING LIFE AS IT HAD BEEN IN THE AREA “BEFORE THE BRIDGE “

WE INTERVIEWED MANY PEOPLE WHO HAD LIVED AND WORKED THERE AND COLLECTED A GREAT ARCHIVE OF MEMORIES AND PICTURES .THESE CAN NOW BE ACCESSED ON THE ORGANISATIONS WEBSITE .

RITA JACOB ,WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT FROM ITS BEGINNING AS A CONTRIBUTOR AND VOLUNTEER ,RECALLS THAT : “ON THE DAY THE PROJECT LAUNCHED AT ST MARTINS I STOOD WITH SOME OLD SCHOOL FRIENDS OPPOSITE THE SITE OF MY HOUSE AND THE PAST HIT ME LIKE A BRICK

PARTICULARLY THE NEEDLESS DESTRUCTION OF THE COMMUNITY IN WHICH I LIVED FOR TWENTY – ONE YEARS .FOR THIS REASON THE PROJECT HAS BEEN AN EMOTIVE AND CARTHARTIC EXPERIENCE ,AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT MY CHILDHOOD AND THE NEIGHBOURHOOD I KNEW SO WELL .

MOREOVER ,BEING INVOLVED IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF OF THE PROJECT ,I LEARNT NEW SKILLS ,AND MET LOVELY PEOPLE ,MY HOUSE ,ALSO LIVING ON IN THE MURAL!LONG MAY IT CONTINUE !”
